Talking Points: A decade ago, the Internet was an experimentalnetwork linking a relative handful of scientists around the world. The World Wide Web didn't exist. Today, hundreds of millions ofpeople around the world shop, bank, romance and trade everythingfrom Beanie Babies to stocks and bonds online. The Internet isarguably the driver of the booming knowledge-based economy. And theNet is becoming a standard tool of political campaigns. Ifpredicted just a decade ago, all these happenings might seem to havesprung from a Jules Verne-esgue scenario. Shall we make somepredictions for the next decade?
At the "The Future of the Net," forum, our panel will preview thenext-wave technology that will make a faster and more reliableInternet accessible, not only from your desktop, but also from yourwrist. They will speak to the scientific, academic and businessusage of the Net. And will look at whether the Net can streamlinegovernment and boost citizen involvement in the democratic process;and how the Net is changing the relationship between the citizen-consumer and information. Also, the panel will look at possibleInternet taxation and regulation, as well as discuss the "digitaldivide" and Net trends in the developing world.
