Iraq called up 33-year-old reservists Monday and insisted it would never submit to U.S. demands to quit Kuwait.
Both Washington and Baghdad professed support Monday for talks to resolve the Persian Gulf crisis, but neither side appeared willing to compromise on when to meet.
Baghdad newspapers reported Monday that Iraq's Ministry of Defense has recalled men born in 1957 to bolster the mobilization of almost 500,000 soldiers already in Kuwait and southern Iraq.
By mid-January, the United States will have deployed more than 400,000 troops in the gulf. Its allies have committed about 220,000.
