Fed: Credit card debt closes in on $22 bln

The Reserve Bank says credit card debt has risen to an all-time high of almost $22 billion.

The average credit card debt is now over $2,200 and the federal opposition says thegovernment should stop financial institutions encouraging inappropriate use of credit.

Opposition banking services spokesman ALAN GRIFFIN says with the Christmas spendingseason well under way, ignoring today's figures could have disastrous consequences formany Australian families.
