Box: Kane wins first boxing gold since 1994

MANCHESTER, Aug 3 AAP - Bantamweight Justin Kane has won Australia's first CommonwealthGames boxing gold medal since 1994 on countback after coming from behind in a thrillingfinal today.

Kane and Canadian Andrew Kooner were locked at 34 points each after four rounds ofthe 54kg contest, but the Australian was awarded the bout 120-113 on countback.

The 20-year-old Queenslander went into the last round 24-22 ahead but fell behind 30-28with 45 seconds to go.

A right uppercut with 30 seconds to go levelled the scores at 30-30 and after a hecticexhange of exhausted blows, another right in the dying moments brought Kane level at 34-34.

He then endured an excruciating wait for the countback before the referee raised his hand.

The Sydney Olympian got off to an unusually slow start and after trailing 5-2, workedhis way on top with a rapid-fire series of lefts and rights to the head.

Kane held a slight edge throughout the bout until Kooner slipped through his wiltingdefence early in the fourth round.

Kane is the first Australian gold medallist since Robbie Peden won the same weightcategory in Victoria, Canada eight years ago and only Australia's ninth in CommonwealthGames history.
